- Dell announced the Venue 8 7840 Android tablet
- It runs Android 4.4, has 4 cameras (3 of which are 3d), has an 8.4 inch screen with little bezel, and has 2560 x 1600 resolution.
- Also is just 6 mm thick, making it the thinnest tablet in the world!
Did you know that while Apple was holding their mega event on September 9th in Cupertino, a little ways away in San Francisco Dell was holding a Developers Conference? Not only that, but while all the attention was on Apple, Dell stealthily announced an awesome new tablet, the Dell Venue 8 7840 (the name sucks). Michael Dell himself, the CEO and founder, announced the new tablet.
This tablet has a few things going for it:
1. It’s gorgeous!
The tablet has an “infinity display” where the screen basically reaches 3 of the edges with almost no bezel. The whole tablet is basically screen. On one end is a thick section that holds the speakers and is where you are supposed to hold the tablet.
2. It’s super-slim!
The tablet is the world’s thinnest at 6 mm thick. Apple just announced their new iPhone 6 Plus is 6.9 mm thick. The past thinnest tablet was the SonyXperia Z3 Tablet Compact, which was 6.4 mm thick. This tablet really blows both of those devices out of the water in terms of how thin it is.
3. It has 4 cameras, 3 of which are 3d.
The 4 cameras work together using what they call RealSense technology so that it focuses extremely well and can actually measure how big objects in the photo are. Michael Dell joked that people will no longer have to debate how big their fish is. I can’t help but think that this feature could be used professionally by builders, architects, interior designers, really any type of designer, and tons of other professions too. The images can be truly 3d. The cameras also could be used for motion control similar to the Microsoft Kinect.
Some other things we know about the new tablet are that it runs Android 4.4, the display (built by Samsung) is gorgeous (some people are saying it is the best tablet display they’ve ever seen), the device has 32 GB storage, and has a Quad-core 2.33 GHz Intel Atom Z3580 processor. There is no release date yet, but it is expected to come out in time for holiday shopping in 2014. Stay tuned for more details about the Dell Venue 8 7840.
