What Others Are Saying:
Jill Duffy, PC Mag: “If you’re looking for a runner’s watch and a heart rate monitor, you should definitely check out the Mio Alpha 2, which combines both in a comfortable and durable wristband.”
Kieran Alger, Wareable: “If you like things paired back, all you care about is heart rate tracking and you’ve got money lying around, this might just be your perfect heart rate monitor. But for everyone else the Mio Alpha 2 probably just doesn’t have enough. It carries a fairly premium price tag for a fitness tracker without packing the breadth of features to back it up. So while it looks good, is comfortable to wear and delivers accurate heart rate training data, with so many capable fitness trackers, smartwatches and smartphone apps on the market, the Alpha 2 just feels like it’s been left a bit behind.”
Valentina Palladino, Tom’s Guide: “As a dedicated workout watch, the Mio Alpha 2 offers one of the best heart-rate monitors available in an easy-to-wear design.”
The Mio Alpha 2 stands out the most for it’s excellent heart rate monitoring features. That is the area that Mio specializes in and so it is no surprise that the Mio Go app also is geared towards heart rate monitoring. The rest of that app is perhaps not as good as some of the competition apps (like FitBit, Jawbone, Misfit, etc) but Mio makes up for this by having support for a lot of 3rd party apps, including Nike+, RunKeeper, MapMyRun, MapMyRide, Wahoo, Digifit, Endomondo, and Strava.
While the heart rate monitor is excellent, the Mio Alpha 2 is missing some features you would expect to get in this price range of fitness trackers. For instance, there is no sleep monitoring. The device also doesn’t have much for smartphone features and Windows phones are not supported at all.
The Mio Alpha 2 has a fairly standard watch design. I certainly like it better than the Mio Fuse design, which was bigger and bulkier. The Alpha 2 comes in three possible colors, all of which essentially are black with a bit of color added (you can get green, yellow, or pink).
Much like the Mio Fuse, I would recommend the Mio Alpha 2 to anyone looking primarily for a device with excellent heart rate monitoring features. If you are more in the market for a general fitness tracker or need other features, perhaps this isn’t the device for you.
