Lenovo A740 All-in-One Review

The company famous for bringing us the Yoga all-in-one laptop has an amazing all-in-one PC, yet people seem to be constantly bashing it.

Yes, we all know that the Yoga is an amazing laptop all-in-one, but did you know that Lenovo also has a PC all-in-one? Not only that, but it seems to be both absolutely gorgeous and have top-of-the-line everything.

Let’s take a look at the specs/features of the Lenovo A740 All-in-one (ad) and delve a little bit into each one:

4th Gen Intel® Core® i7-4558U Processor(2.80GHz 1600MHz 4MB)

The 4th Gen Intel Core processors have been out since late 2010 and thus are quite stable and have been heralded as a great success. They are used in a ton of different computers, and the i7 is the best of that line.

Windows 8.1 64

Honestly, this is the big drawback to this PC. Windows 8 was a mess. Windows 8.1 is an improved version of Windows 8, but still just had something off about it. We soon will have Windows 10 (the technical preview is out already) which appears to be a huge improvement jammed full of great features like Cortana and a new web browser, Spartan. Best of all, Windows 10 will be a free update for Windows 7 and 8 users, so if you bought this computer (the Lenovo a740) now, you would get that free update and this would be one of the best Windows 10 computers possible.

NVIDIA GeForce GT840A GDDR5 2GB Graphics

You actually can now upgrade this to the G850 for around $200 from Lenovo or through the retailer. This is one of the top graphics cards out there and will allow you to use this PC as your gaming rig for a ton of high quality games.

Display

The Lenovo a740 has a 27″ Full HD Display (1920×1080) all-in-one with multi-touch technology. You can actually now upgrade to 2560×1440 through Lenovo or your retailer. The monitor is quite large at 27 inches, and the QHD display uses natural, accurate looking colors.

Additional Specs

  • Memory 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600 MHz (1x SO-DIMM)
  • Storage 1TB (5400 RPM) + 8GB SSHD
  • Dimensions (W x D x H) 31.9″ x 22.0″ x 8.5″
  • Weighs 19.6 lbs
  • 2 megapixels (1080p) Webcam
  • Comes with three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI input, and a multiformat card reader.
  • Wireless features include 802.11ac Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0.
  • Optional TV Tuner

There have been quite a few gamers recently mentioning online that this PC is basically the best out-of-the-box gaming PC you could buy from a major manufacturer. You could build something slightly better yourself (by purchasing individual parts) but this is actually quite a deal when you consider what you are getting plus you don’t have the problems with putting it together yourself and you can get support from Lenovo.

This PC seems to be selling quite well (as I write this most vendors are nearly sold out) yet all the customer reviews seem to be quite negative. After reading through a ton of reviews on various sites, it looks like most people that bothered writing reviews were angry about issues like figuring out how to use features (there are wonky motion controls) or receiving the product in the mail and having defects, scratches, etc. I would guess that for every person that wrote a negative review, there were probably ten people or more that got this PC and had no issues, they just didn’t bother writing reviews online.

Lenovo A740 All-in-One Review

I’ve also noticed that there aren’t many actual reviews of the PC online. For instance, CNET just wrote a blurb with the specs but didn’t give an opinion on it. It seems to have slipped below the radar of most tech sites for some reason. Originally, it was debuted at CES 2014 and came out in June of 2014. You may have seen the Lenovo A740 all-in-one (ad) being featured in Season 2 and 3 of Arrow on the CW (check out the image above).

Overall

After spending time looking at this PC online and trying it out in the store, I am really excited about it. Not only is it gorgeous, but it has basically top-of-the-line everything and can function as a gaming PC. The big drawback is that it runs Windows 8.1, which really isn’t that bad and we’ll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 soon. If you are in the market for a great PC, I would seriously consider the Lenovo A740 All-in-one (ad).
